Best Solar Panels

by Tom Charlesworth on March 12, 2012

There are many considerations that need to be accounted for when determining which solar panels are the “best”. To start with one solar panel might be better/more suited to one situation over another. This article shall approach a number of scenarios, giving examples of how different panels are more suited to different scenarios.

The Best Solar Panels For a Residential Roof

Residential roofs come in all shapes and sizes. For the purposes of this article we shall discuss the best panels for a home looking for a 4kWp system. Conservatively a Solar PV system requires 8 square meters per kWp of solar capacity. Therefore a 4kWp requires approximately 32 square meters. Every Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline solar panel on the market today can provide a 4kWp system within this 32 square meter guide. Therefore, why chose one panel over another? Panel efficiency should not come into the equation unless roof space is of short supply, read here for more information. The following is a list of key characteristics that need to be taken into consideration when deciding upon a solar panel:

- Warranties – How long and the small print (up to what amount of output does my warranty cover)?
- Power Tolerance – all panels are given power tolerances (how much the actual output can fluctuate from that stated).
- Relevant Certification - Check that the product is fully MCS certified and what other certificates the product has received.
- Price – Is paying more for one product over another justified?

The Best Solar Panels For a Commercial Roof

Commercial installations are rarely limited by roof space and return on investment is key. For this reason the more expensive and space efficient Monocrystalline solar panels are rarely utilised, Polycrystalline or Thin-film are the norm. These products have lower space efficiency but yield is generally higher when looking at performance in less than ideal conditions i.e. overcast or hotter days. These products offer both a safe and great return on investment. The following is a list of key considerations that need to be taken into consideration when deciding upon a solar panel:

Warranties - How long and the small print (up to what amount of output does my warranty cover)?
Power Tolerance - All panels are given power tolerances (how much the actual output can fluctuate from that stated).
Relevant Certification - For agricultural units it is worth checking that a panel has ammonia testing certificates. In addition any sites near to the sea may consider checking that panels have valid saline testing.
- Price – What level of returns are you aiming for and what level experience does your selected installer hold?
