Microgeneration Certification Scheme Accreditation for Solar Installers

The primary accreditation and quality control organisation for solar energy installers in the United Kingdom is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). This report will briefly explain who they are and what they do.

The Government’s Role

The government do not have a body that upholds these standards, there only face value aspect an advice centre they offer the public entering the industry. This is a common approach internationally as it allows the industry to be kept at arms length from accountability. Whilst this can be seen as somewhat unhelpful, it is necessary to avoid industry issues on standards and practices from feeding back blame on the legislators. Instead, they utilise independent quality control organisations to maintain standards by only affiliating government incentives such as the Feed-in Tariff with business registered through them. Our political representatives thus closely monitor and guide the industry from a safe distance, stepping in to curb growth or issues when necessary.

MCS: The Organisation

The MCS is a European Standard EN 45011 Scheme. This standard is applied to non-governmental bodies operating in Europe that offer product certification schemes. Essentially, it ensures that an organisation can indeed uphold certifications in any given industry or field. It is a qualification, deemed by governmental perspectives as being effective in qualifying accreditation bodies. For the MCS, it is the field of micro-generation of energy and heat. It certifies that a third party such as an installation company needs to comply with the standards set by the EN 45011 Scheme in order to be recognised as competent and reliable. The standard provides guidelines on how to operate such a certification process and ensure validity and control. For a helpful outline of the MCS’ structure, please view their website here.

All that this means is that the MCS is certified by the Government as being an organisation capable of setting standards within the industry. It is funded by the industry and it’s primary role is to maintain quality control in both components and installations.
